Ibane were beaten by 4 points in the West Region Minor A hurling Final played in Bandon . Ibane were underdogs going into this game and their cause wasn't helped by injuries and sickness to a few players before hand. It was Ahan who were well on top in the early stages and had the opening 2 points before Bill Fleming got Ibane's 1st score. It was the Mary's / Mathunas combination who were well on top in the 1st half and soon the lead was 0-05 to 0-1, Ted Kearney replied with an Ibane score , Ahan continued to dominate and but for wayward shooting would have been out the gate at half time and were good value for their half time lead of 0-09 to 0-04 Eoin Lawton who led the Ibane challenge all the game getting the other scores.
The 2nd half began in much the same fashion with Ahan getting the 1st point they soon had the lead stretched to 7 but little by little Ibane began to get into the game helped by points from Jack Cahalane, Darragh O Donovan, Bill and Eoin there were only 4 points between the teams with 50 minutes gone, an Ahan point made it , Micheal Whelton with a great point reduced the deficit again.
Ibane were on top now but the clock was against them and goals were needed ,Ibane did get 2 close in frees these were stopped by the defence and with them went Ibane's chance of victory. Ibane's hurling season is over and while defeat was their lot they can take a lot of heart from their 2nd half display with a lot of the younger players and lesser lights really standing up to the bigger more physical Ahan team . Credit due to Danny Murphy the trainer who put unreal time into this team. No one likes losing but the players have a great chance to rectify that situation with the Minor Football Final against Ross / Dohenys in the next 2 weeks.
