Friday 09 Oct 2015Ibane Minor Football - Final

DUNMANWAY, 19:15PM

Ibane Gaels 1-09 Carbery Rangers 0-11

Ibane Gaels had one of their biggest wins since being formed in 2012, when they captured the Rebel Og West Minor A Football Championship with a hard fought victory over Carbery Rangers in the final played in Dunmanway. Ibane would have been underdogs going into this game and it looked that way in the early stages, as they seemed to be nervous and Ross raced into an 3 point lead.  Bit by bit however,  Ibane recovered and by the end of the 1st quarter, were level thanks to two points  from Jack Cahalane and a Gerry Crowley effort. Ross got the next two points courtesy of Ibane mistakes, but the  Maroon and Blues replied with an Eoin Lawton point and another Gerry Crowley score. Ross had added two more of their own to lead at half time by 0-07 to 0-05.

Coach Paul Holland laid it on the line at half time with an inspirational team talk and within two minutes of the restart Ibane were ahead, when a long ball from Jack Cahalane deceived the Ross goalie, and ended up in the net. Ibane tails were up and two frees from Cahalane, had the score up to 1-07 to 0-07.  Ross replied with a point but another Jack free restored the goal advantage.

Ross were starting to get on top now and had reduced the lead down to a one  point game when Sean Holland scored a great individual score to put Ibane two up.

The pressure came on the Ibane defence as Ross roared forward looking for the goal that would win the game, but, led by Conor O Regan at full back and David Kiely at half back the Ibane defence held firm helped by some brilliant defending by Ciaran O Sullivan and goalkeeper Micheal Whelton, who both pulled off marvelous stops to keep the Ibane goal intact.

It was heart stopping stuff but when referee Michael Collin's whistle blew, Ibane had emerged victorious on a scoreline of 1-09 to 0-11.

This was an overall team performance with every one doing their bit, however special mention must go to Liam Colberth, Tiernan McKeown, Darragh O Donovan, three of the younger players on the team, who didn't put a foot wrong all night, while  Eoin Lawton  put in a man of the match type performance.

Ibane now play Macroom in the County Semi-Final.

Team Micheal Whelton, Ciaran O Sullivan, Conor O Regan, Tiernan McKeown, Dylan Harrington, David Kiely, Darragh O Donovan, Gerry Crowley 0-02, Eoin Lawton 0-01, Bill Fleming, Jack Cahalane 1-05, Steven Madden, Sean Holland 0-01, Eoin Holland, Liam Colberth, sub Sean Maxwell.

As expected, 7.15 in Dunmanway on a Friday night, was a step too far for me.
