Barryroe 2-04 Youghal 2-02

This was a game where the West took on the East on the field of play. It was a completely different game to the beautiful ebb and flow of the semi-final v Cloughduv.

Youghal opened the scoring with a point. Our goalie, Therese McCarthy’s great puck out found Grace Tobin in midfield who set up Jessica McCarthy for a goal. Next both Maeve Whelton and Chloe Collins had scoring opportunities but narrowly missed. Jess was again on target. Naomi Murphy and Aine Moloney made relieving clearances and Ciara Collins winning a lot of possession, creating chances for our forwards. Claire Tobin battled hard for scores. Youghal closed the first half with a point. Barryroe lead 2-00 to 0-02 at the break.

The second half was very exciting. Youghal came out all guns blazing and scored a goal. Ciara O’S replied with a point from play. Roisin McCarthy in midfield set up chances for our forwards but Youghal were not yielding. Claire Dullea who was causing problems for the Youghal defence, won three frees, Ciara O’S converting two. Youghal then replied with a goal. The East Cork girls were now gaining momentum. It was now nail biting and nerve racking. We were a point ahead with 4 minutes to go. Then Youghal won a free, fortunately for us, it hit the post but the Youghal girls were relentless and charged through for a goal. It was heart stopping stuff. Half our team were now back to form a blanket defence to save the match and it was Roisin Dullea who made a crucial save at the goal mouth and cleared. Andrea Tobin was sharp with her first touch. In the last attack, Aideen O’Riordan was free and sent the ball into the forwards and it was our gutsy Jess that pointed before the final whistle blew. We could now breathe a sign of relief.  It may not have been the highest scoring game but the large number of supporters that were present got their monies worth in this game.

The Cup was presented to our Captain, Ciara O’Sullivan by Chairperson of Cork Juvenile Camogie Board, Mary O’Sullivan.  Jessica McCarthy was presented with the Player of the Match Award by Linda Egan, PRO Cork Juvenile Camogie Board.
