Barryroe 3-08 Newcestown 1-05

Credit must go to both teams - and the referee - for serving up a great hour’s hurling in Barryroe on Monday evening. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half Barryroe started well and led by 1-03 to no score after 15 minutes however they might well have been out of sight were it not for the superb play of Newcestown net-minder Donnacha O’Mahony. Newcestown thundered back into the game at this stage scoring 1-03 without reply to leave the scores level approaching half-time. A well worked goal from full-back turned full-forward Michael O’Donovan approaching half-time gave Barryroe a slender advantage at the break with the score reading Barryroe 2-03 Newcestown 1-04. With the visitors playing with the wind at their backs in the second half the home side had to dig deep at times to keep them at bay with backs Mike Collins, Sean Flynn and Dylan Kelly in top form. There was no quarter asked or given by either side in that period - a more honest and hard fought half of hurling will hardly be witnessed at Páirc Uí Mhurchú this year.
