MATCH REPORT: U21B County Championship Q/F

15 May, 2016

Ibane Gaels 3-09 St Nick's 0-15

On a warm sunny afternoon in Bandon, Ibane Gaels advanced to the semi-final of the U21 B County Football Championship with a hard fought win over St. Nick's. Ibane had the early advantage on the scoreboard with points from Jack Cahalane, two from play and one freekick, back came St. Nick's and the teams were level at 3 points each at the 15th minute stage. Ibane were being too defensive with the wind at their backs and a bit of a reshuffle resulted in more positive play, best illustrated with John Whelton banging home a goal after a good team move 2 minutes before the short whistle, St. Nick's responded with a point meaning both teams retiring at the break, Ibane leading on a scoreline 1-05 to 0-05.

On the resumption St. Nick's started with a point then Ibane worked the ball upfield and Mark Crowley was on hand to stroll the ball into the net, 2-06 to 0-06 for Ibane. Another point from Mark and we were seven up and seemingly in control. St. Nick's had other ideas and slowly they started chipping away at the Ibane lead and with 10 minutes remaining the gap was down to 2 points and St. Nick's had all the momentum. Ibane were then awarded a penalty and Mark expertly stuck it in the bottom right corner 3-08 to 0-12. However St. Nick's responded and 3 more points made it a 2 point game again, a dangerous lead at any time, however sub Ted Kearney kicked over the last point in the fourth minute of injury to leave the final score Ibane 3-09 St Nicks 0-15.

Ibane now await the winners of Fr O'Neill's/Aghabullogue.
