Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk

15 August, 2017

A brief note from the organising Committee on last Saturdays Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk.

“A Million thanks for all those who helped in any way in making the first Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk such an outstanding success. To all the registers, stewards and helpers from Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station and Barryroe GAA, we say well, well done. To our great Lifesavers in the Irish Coastguard and especially in the Seven Heads Station, you were invaluable on the day. To our drinks, food and snack sponsors  Barryroe Co Op, Carbery/Kinetica and Clona, thank you so much for fuelling many to walk far more than they were planning to do. To all our other sponsors, thank you for ensuring that the full €20 euro registration fee goes in full to Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat.

To all of the nurses and first aiders, many with close links to Barryroe Gaa, thank you for your time at all the locations in ensuring a safe event. A special thanks to all our friends along the route who stewarded and helped us on Saturday, you made everyone feel so very welcome.

And thanks to Micheal Martin who started the Walk and completed the full 26.2 miles in a cracking time of 6 hours and 42 minutes. Of course he got great encouragement (and two Kinetica Protein Bars) from our Club Runai Richard Murphy as he passed the Dunworley Water and Snack stop.

To all you participants, well over 300,  a million thanks for coming, we hope you will be back and we will be setting the date soon for 2018.  And what about the underage Barryroe Gaa Club participants who took up the challenge at the start and just kept on walking, well done. Lots more pictures on the facebook page of The Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk.  The reaction of all including many many strangers has been amazing as they saw the real beauty of the parish of Barryroe and the greater Seven Heads Peninsula".
