Last Night of Street Hurling 2017

01 September, 2017

There was a great turnout in Courtmac last Thursday for the final night of street hurling this summer. Well done to the 37 boys and girls who took part on the night and everyone who turned up and played over the 8 nights during the summer.

Pride of place on the night must go to the 10 dads who rolled back the years and played a no-nonsense game of hurling at a blistering pace (it certainly felt like it!) to round off proceedings. With their proud children looking on in awe (gasps of “ I never knew they were that good!” could be heard from the crowd) they gave an exhibition of how hurling should be played i.e. little running but plenty of pulling. With the scores level at 5 goals apiece deep into injury time and with no sign of referee Tara Fleming showing any mercy and blowing the full time whistle, it took a golden goal from Danny (by that stage on the verge of collapse) to settle proceedings in favour of the stronger finishing and infinitely fitter yellow team. Hard luck to a gallant blue team who ran out of steam on the night - as opposed to the yellows who never had any to begin with. Without doubt the turning point of the game was the moment star playmaker for the blues, Padraig Collins broke his favourite hurley whilst the yellows’ tactic of regularly despatching the ball into the tide to slow the game down was, no doubt another big factor in the result. Other highlights included long range goals from Norman and Cllr. Hayes, the stout (I better be careful what I say here) defending of Colm Coakley and John Dineen, the goal poaching of Pat Sexton up front, the box-to-box all action display of David Fleming, the ferocious tackling of Kevin Flynn and the supreme stickwork of Liam Murphy in the yellow goal. Well done all.

Yellow Team: Liam Murphy (Cpt.), David Fleming, Danny Murphy, Kevin Flynn & John Dineen.

Blue Team: Paul Hayes (Cpt.), Padraig Collins, Colm Coakley, Norman Fleming & Pat Sexton.

P.S. In case anyone doubts the accuracy of the above account, see below link to video of the game (or most of it) with interesting commentary by some of the aforementioned kids.
