U8's visit Navy Base

30 October, 2017

Last Saturday afternoon, the Barryroe Under 8 team were privileged to be taken on a tour of the Naval Base at Haulbowline Island by team coach and Butlerstown native Lt Cdr David Fleming of the Irish Naval Service. David has recently taken command of the navy’s newest vessel, the L.E. William Butler Yeats and after first treating the boys to lunch, he took them on a fascinating walking tour of the naval base before bringing them aboard his new ship. Considering it was recently built at a cost of over €70 million and had on-board 1x76mm cannon and numerous other armaments this could have been a risky manoeuvre! However the boys behaviour was impeccable (it helped that the cannon’s firing button didn’t appear to be turned on) and they had a fantastic time visiting the ship’s bridge, gym, kitchen, engine room, captain’s cabin as well as seeing up close the enormous cannon up on deck. It was a brilliant way to round off their season and a very special word of thanks must go to David for organising this visit. Barryroe GAA Club would also like to wish him every success in his new role.
