Juniors suffer defeat

15 April, 2018

Barryroe 1-06 Kilmeen 0-16

A gallant effort by Barryroe in the first round of the Rowa/Rowlex Pharma Junior Football Championship in Ballinascarthy fell just short as a more accomplished Kilmeen finished strongly. Having trailed by six points at the midway point of the second half, a Ted Kearney major in the 46 minute after some great approach work by Moloney, Murphy and Hurley gave The Blues renewed hope. It was all Barryroe at this stage and when Hurley broke free and another goal seemed imminent a last ditch leg block (which the referee seemed to miss) thwarted the opportunity and the chance was gone. To rub salt into the wounds Kilmeen broke quickly and a peach of a point by James Clancy of Kilmeen saw them extend the lead to four points and in truth they never looked like losing from this stage as they tagged on five points in the final ten minutes.

Conor Madden marshalled the Barryroe defence commendably and his lengthy kick outs defied the conditions in the second half. Full back John Whelton was solid throughout and will learn greatly from his first championship outing in this position. Conor O’Regan was his tigerish self before injury curtailed his involvement in the 26th minute, Conor Tyndall performed well in his stead. David O’Sullivan named at corner back, but positioned further out the field had a great game and was a constant source of menace with his direct running. The half back line of the Kiely brothers and Patrick Moloney performed well without ever dominating a strong opposition. Midfield was served with a combination of personnel over the hour as Barryroe struggled to win primary possession. Jack Murphy, Daniel O’Driscoll and Captain Mark Crowley gave it their all over the hour and all were good in possession. Ted Kearney finished as Barryroe’s top scorer with two impressive points from play in the first half and a super goal finished expertly in the second half had given The Blues a slight chance. Johnny Donovan was his usual industrious self with some clever distribution in heavy traffic. Darren McCarthy in the corner showed well for the ball and pressured the Kilmeen defence with his strong but fair tackles. Full forward Jack Cahalane had a solid display until Sean Holland tried to add something new in the final ten minutes. Any dangerous attack normally had Ciaran Hurley at the heart of it and he had a good game without making an impact on the scoreboard. Overall a good display from a young Barryroe side against one of the championship favourites, and at the midway point of the second half had the result in some doubt.

Kilmeen now progress to round 3 whilst Barryroe await the losers of Castlehaven and O'Donovan Rossa in round 2.
