Golden Oldies Win Again!

31 August, 2018

Our series of Summer Street Hurling in Courtmac tennis court came to an end on Thursday night last. We had an average of >35 players per night over the 7 nights and despite the loss of many tennis balls (keep your eyes peeled on all local beaches), great fun was had by all. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part and thank you to all the parents for their support. The night concluded with a fiercely contested game between a star-studded Barryroe U12 team and a team of decrepit old-timers (combined age of almost 300 years) cobbled together at short notice. Honours eventually went to the Golden Oldies who snatched victory from the jaws of what seemed inevitable defeat with an extra-time golden goal by Pat Sexton. Man of the match, Dan Dwyer gave a masterclass in hurling in the middle of the court for the Oldies. Full-back TJ O’Donovan rolled back the years with a superb man-marking job on his son and U12 danger-man, Michael. John Dineen manned the goals superbly producing a number of top class saves from U12 goal-poacher supreme, son Dermot. Despite the best efforts of classy Zac Farrell in goals and Sean Flynn at full back for the U12s, Pat Sexton and baby of the team, Paul Hayes nipped in for crucial goals for the Oldies. Danny Murphy couldn’t get into the game and appeared more concerned with the safety of his U12 charges with championship coming up – probably justified considering some of the stick-men lining out for the Oldies. Dan Moloney pulled the strings valiantly for the U12s in the middle of the court whilst teammate Luke Murphy dispatched an unstoppable penalty past the afore-mentioned Dineen, despite the antics of Dwyer, O’Donovan et al. No doubt the U12s will learn from this crushing defeat whilst the Oldies can winter well, safe in the knowledge that they still hold the upper hand over the youth of today.

U12 team: Zac Farrell, Sean Flynn, Dan Moloney, Luke Murphy, Michael O’Donovan, Dermot Dineen.

Golden Oldies: John Dineen, TJ O’Donovan, Danny Murphy, Dan Dwyer (capt.), Paul Hayes, Pat Sexton.
