Entertainment in abundance at a floodlit Páirc Uí Mhurchú on Wednesday night last for the Bandon Co-Op Junior D Championship encounter between Barryroe and Ilen Rovers. Over the course of the hour the boisterous supporters were served up to some tough tackling, botched 45s, magical scores, dreadful misses and every colour card under the rule book! It was the visitors who got the crucial scores coming up to the short whistle, retiring to the sanction of the dugout ahead on a somewhat flattering scoreline 2-06 to 0-07 ahead. Both teams battled hard in the second half and when Kevin O'Driscoll confidently buried a penalty, it seemed they would kick for home. Alas, Ilen's defense redoubled their efforts and manfully held on.
Score of the game goes to Barryroe wing forward Shane O'Donovan. Attacking the dressing room goal in the first half and boxed in by three defenders, Shane found himself hugging the end line and with no other option an expertly executed banana kick sailed over the bar catching both umpires unaware, the momentarily stunned reaction of the nearby gallery had to be seen to be believed!
