Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walks 2020

05 June, 2020

Message from the committee of the Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walks 2020

As we face into a different and difficult summer for recreational events across the country and the world, we have had to look closely at our Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walks that were scheduled for Sat 8th Aug. Over the past 3 years it has been our great pleasure to welcome valued supporters on the majestic route from Courtmacsherry Bay to Inchydoney Bay, along the Seven Heads Peninsula in stunning West Cork.

In order to keep the general population and the walking community safe and healthy, we have decided that we cannot proceed with this year’s Walk in its usual format but needed to be inventive in order to keep people fit and challenged, while at the same time, raising funds for the Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat Station. It is very encouraging to see that there is a strong awareness of how physical activity can positively impact mental and physical health, particularly at this time of crisis. With this in mind, we have decided to target the month commencing the 10th August for walkers to partake in a recreational walk of any distance or challenge, anywhere in the world and send us a photo or short video which we will share on our Marathon Walk Facebook page. Walking in your Walk T-shirt would be great promotion for this initiative.

In the spirit of goodwill and friendship it would be deeply appreciated, in the month of August, that a donation be made on-line or otherwise to our Walk fundraising in aid of Courtmacsherry Harbour Lifeboat, with every donation going in its entirety to the RNLI, the Charity that saves lives at sea. We will issue an on-line 2020 Walk Certificate to all those who complete the challenge.

Information on the on-line donations will be given at a later stage in mid July.

Please adhere to HSE and Government guidelines on social distancing and keeping safe at all times.

Why not challenge yourself with a gentle stroll or a steady pace, in any location either locally or further afield and doing our bit for social exercising, keeping fit and active and at the same time raising funds for a very worthy cause. Why not use your front door as your new trailhead!

This month long challenge is a joint initiative by the Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat Station in conjunction with Barryroe GAA in the promotion of the Respect the Water Campaign to help prevent drownings at sea or on inshore waters. It is facilitated by The Great Wild Atlantic Marathon
Walk committee comprising of members of both organisations.

Over the past three years, €23,322 has been raised from these walks for the Courtmacsherry RNLI
Lifeboat Station and with all other local Lifeboat fundraising events cancelled so far this year, this is a very important source of funds to help fund the 365 day service that the RNLI provides around our coast. The Courtmacsherry All Weather Lifeboat has remained on active duty during the Covid
Lockdown and will continue to do so in the months and years ahead.

We look forward to creative challenges at whatever distances and target that Month commencing 10th of August, when hopefully we will be returning to a new normal across the world.

Let the 2020 challenge be ...to walk a Marathon...whether you do it in one day or 30 days!
