U11s in Páirc Uí Chaoimh

24 July, 2022

Barryroe U11s became one of the first teams from the Club to play in the recently redeveloped Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday afternoon last where they took part in the Summer League finals for the series of hurling blitz's that have been running throughout the month of July. Early morning rain on the Seven Heads, thankfully, gave way to a dryer spell to allow their games to be completed in the afternoon during a superb feast of hurling which had commenced at 9am and had been organised by the coaching arm of Rebel Og led by Colm Crowley. Delays in Innishannon due to possible match day traffic all helped contribute to the excitement on the day. Even more excitement awaited at the stadium when a number of players managed to secure autographs and pictures with that Icon of Hurling, Patrick Horgan. What an absolute gentlemen to give his time to those who asked for a picture or autograph.

Once the games commenced, our first game was against his Club Glen Rovers and the Barryroe lads performed admirably against a good Glen team in a game where the rules were modified so that players (keeper excluded) cannot handle the ball unless it comes directly from a puckout or a free. This led to three fast and free flowing games allowing all players a chance to get involved in play. The second game was an end to end game against Fr O’Neills with both sides battling manfully on the perfect surface. Our final game was again against a Glen Rovers side but a different set of players and again Barryroe performed very well. All the players loved the experience and at the end were presented with their medals by 2035 Cork hurler Cian Coleman! Saturday’s visit to Páirc Uí Chaoimh was the first of two visits there this week as the players will return on Wednesday morning to take part in a Munster GAA activity day in football. Players playing on the day: Rian O’Sullivan, James Coleman, Rory Collins, Ethan Kelly, Darragh Kirby, Sean Mythen, Dillon Tobin, Dylan O’Brien, Darragh O’Sullivan, Cormac Whelton, Mikey Whelton.

The summer trips to the great stadiums of Munster are not finished yet, however, as next Wednesday during Cul Camp week the players will hit the road once again to make the trip to Tipp and the home of hurling that is Semple stadium where they are due to take on teams from Tipperary and Clare, so another early start on that day.

Many thanks to Arthur Tobin for pics and report. Thank you to all the coaches and parents who travelled on the day.
