CHAMPIONEEEEEEEZZZZ (04 Nov 2012)

Barryroe 3-9                     Clonakilty 0-7

Barryroe's Camogie team returned to the winner's enclosure after too long an absence, with a hard fought win over Clonakilty on Sunday.  Despite some water in the goalmouths, the Brinny pitch was in wonderful condition for the time of year. The wind favoured the town side in the first half, but we had the better start, with Síle Burns pointing after two minutes. We then went nine minutes without a score. Clon missed a couple of frees, before being awarded a penalty. Eimear White saved. She went on to make a number of great saves and it must really give a backline confidence to have such a steady keeper behind you.

Three minutes later, Síle Burns was fouled and Jenny O'Leary converted for a two point lead. Jenny had picked up her sixth All Star award last night in Dublin and had driven back down this morning. On fourteen and fifthteen minutes, Síle and Jenny added two more points, and Clon came close to goaling before they finally opened their account with a pointed free.  Still we were motoring well now, with Noreen O'Driscoll holding the centre. Just coming up to the thirty minute mark, Síle Burns won possession twenty metres out and soloed in before crashing the ball to the net. When the same player was fouled seconds later, Jenny pointed to leave us 1-5 to 0-1 ahead. The ref then played over six minutes of injury time, (there were a couple of stopages), but it seemed as if we had settled for the half time break. Clon came roaring into the game. The added four points without reply,  (including two 45's) and now the half time score was 1-5 to 0-5.

There was a bit of nervousness on the sideline now and matters were not helped when Clon had a point two minutes in to leave just two  between the sides. The game however was won in the 15 minutes that followed

.  When analyising any match, you must always look to the basics. Very often the "experts" on the ditch will not even spot what's going on. Step forward Isla Dineen.  After a decent first half, she worked even harder, doing the unglamorous work, hooking blocking and generally being a pain in the neck to the opposition. With her team mates now following her example, we strangled Clon in the middle of the pitch, ( a la Kilkenny), and they could not get their rythm going again. Most of the ball was now heading towards the Clon goal and we had the players to use it.

Jenny O'Leary pointed a 45 and when the Clon keeper could only bat out Geraldine Collins's shot, Síle Burns pounced for her second goal. Then Geraldine set up Síle for another point and on sixteen minutes Síle added another point to leave us 2-8 to 0-6 ahead.

On eighteen minutes came an inspirational long range point from Skipper Karen McCarthy, before Clon had a point from a free.

Twenty three minutes in, Clon raised themselves for one last challenge. They broke through the centre and a  goal looked certain before keeper Éimear White bravely threw herself in the way to save a certain goal. Within minutes Clon were awarded a penalty, but again Éimear rose to the occasion with another fine stop. She took a knock in clearing the ball but eventually recovered. It was only later that we found out she had injured her back during the week.

In injury time, Denise O'Sullivan won possession in a crowed goal mouth. She had the wit to know she had no room to swing a stick, so she hand passed the ball towards the net, (allowed in Camogie). The ball stopped in the soggy goal mouth, but she was first to re-act to kick the ball over the line.

The final whistle blew just after, to leave us winners by 3-9 to 0-7.

Scorers Síle Burns 2-4, Jenny O'Leary 0-4 (2f 1 45), Denise O;Sullivan 1-0 and Karen McCarthy 0-1

Player of the match...................... Síle Burns.
