Townlands golf competition. Bookie gives the odds.

23 December, 2014

====There are 8 teams of four taking part this year.
Below is the photo of the presentation of the coveted Mahogony Sculpture that has become second only in prestige to the famed Claret Jug. The current holders and going for three in a row are Tir Na nÉan.

 Neil Whelton,(wearing the trophy), in congratulated by Liam Murphy after last years win.

 The winning squad, all Wheltons.

Meanwhile....................................

As we go to press, we have invited one of the lowest handicapped golfers in the Parish, Billy Drake (13), to analyse the chances of each team and lay the odds for those who may need a flutter or two. Bets to Billy on his mobile before Christmas Eve.

Tier Na Nean.  Holders for the past two years, this is a classy team
backboned by classy youngsters Ted Kearney , Ian Whelton and John Whelton. Rumour has it that Captain Denis Whelton, is struggling to hold his place and has threatened not to bring the first prize unless he is allowed to pick himself.

Odds 6/4.
==================================================Seven Heads. Darkhorses under the driving of Captain John Fleming. Both Denis and Patrick have recently been spotted on the Driving Range (But in Cars). The big question is who will be the Anchor of this team. Dangerous as they know the course inside out.

Odds 8/1.
==================================================
Butlerstown. One really to watch this year as their Captain, Brendan O'Sullivan has now turned pro and given up the Day job.  They haven't performed lately but write them off at your peril. They have recruited wisely, we are told, some with no roots to the Village, but they have invoked the Great, Great, Great, Great grandfather rule.

Odds 5/1.
==================================================
Cullinagh. This quartet of Liam, Jack, John and Vincent are just are not good enough and for all their talk, they would be better off picking spuds for the day. Captain Vincent O Donovan  may well be on his last chance this year, as for a rich golfing Townland, they haven't been near the winners enclosure in the past five years.

Odds 14/1.
==================================================
Courtmacsherry Village. Now this is the team has been assembled at a mighty price. In the transfer market for the last month, it is rumoured that they will have the four longest hitters on the entire day in Fota. If they don't win this year, it might be curtains for their Captain Shane O Donovan, but these are worthy favourites.

Odds  4/6.
==================================================
Meelmane Ladies.   Word reaches us that two of this team haven't wore skirts since the Chrimas Panto when they were only four.  It will be interesting what Captains  Denise McCarthy and Ann O' Donovan have up their sleeve this year. Hopefully they might avoid the random gender test on the morning and all eyes will be on whether they all play from the Ladies Tee Box.

Odds at a
careful 6/1

==================================================

Top of the Hills/Barreragh. Making a welcome return is this star studded team under the careful eye of Captain Neil Sexton. Promising but somehow, we believe the Captain is concentrating on some other engagement over the Christmas period and this might be a real distraction. They have the Talentbut have they the mettle for this rival task.

Odds  4/1.

==================================================
Cullinagh Rejects.  There is nothing as dangerous as those that really believe that they have been rejected by their Provence and Captain Billy O'Donovan is out for revenge here. Word has that he has recruited well but has been dealt a body blow with his trump card, Cally having to collect a few tankers of Milk now on this morning. With wounded prides, these are real contenders.

Odds 4/1.

==================================================

If there are any other Townland in the Parish out there that might be
interested in challenging for next year 2015, give Denis Whelton or Vincent
O Donovan a ring during the year.
