Courtmacsherry Lifeboat.. Busy Times

Its been a very busy last 12 months at the RNLI Lifeboat Station in
Courtmacsherry and the annual statistics that were released in the past
week for 2014, showed that the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat rescued 25 People in
callouts during the year. A big thank you to all the crew that were involved
in the many callouts during the year and the regular training that the 30
skilled crew members take part in on a weekly basis.  Sometimes the callout
can be a focal point of the work in the station but of equal importance is
the great work of the Fundraising  Committee and the Branch and other
Committees as well,  who give so much time on a voluntary basis to the
station year in year out. Last year in Ireland, the RNLI's Lifeboat crews
launched 1,089 times, bringing 1,414 people to safety.

The nature of the callouts during 2014 was split between Fishing Boats and
Pleasure Craft and a feature was some very long callouts to Fishing Vessels
well off the coast and some well off the Kinsale Head Gas Fields.  Who knows
what the next callout will be, as demonstrated just only last week when the
bleepers were activated with the chilling message that there was an aircraft
just off the south coast of Courtmacsherry, that had sent out an alert to
say that one engine had failed. Within minutes the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat
was assembled under Coxswain Sean O Farrell and for the next 42 minutes,
with a crew of seven, was ready at sea to provide assistance if required.
Thankfully the Aircraft landed safely at Cork Airport to the relief of all
concerned, the Crew that had assembled on the Lifeboat and Station Officers
at The Lifeboat Station, who  monitored what could have been a very serious
incident.

Commemorating the Sinking of The Lusitania.

This year will be a very special one for the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station
as in May it  will commemorate the 100 Year Anniversary of the sinking of
the Lusitania just 11.2 miles off the Courtmacsherry Coast with a loss of
1200 lives.  On the  7th May 1915, The Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat, then
stationed at  Barrys Point, launched at 2.10pm to bravely row to the scene
of the greatest tragedy off our coast. A special Courtmacsherry Lifeboat
Lusitania Centenary Committee under the stewardship of Crewman Dara Gannon
have been extremely bust over the past two years in putting together a
fitting programme of events to aptly commemorate this momentous sinking. The
present Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Crew with the help of the local Rowing Club,
relatives of the original crewmen and others will re-enact this arduous row
in a replica lifeboat to the one that was on station at Barrys Point 100
years ago.  This fully restored old RNLI Ryder Lifeboat will be coming from
Polperro in Cornwall.  Physical training for all taking part in this row
commenced in early Jan under the watchful eye of Martin Curran in Barryroe
School Hall.  Also commenced at present is presentations on the Lusitania
and the Courtmacsherry Link to various Schools in the catchment area under
the watchful eye of the Stations Education officer Micheal Hurley. A full
week long programme of events has been planned from  Friday 1st May to
Thursday the 7th May with the full re-enactment of the callout taking place
on Sunday May 3rd.  Full details on  www.lusitaniacentenary.com.
