Coaching Workshop

Danny, Brendan and Paidi recently attended a workshop in Clonakilty by Dr. Wesley O’Brien, UCC who gave a presentation on how to implement the Physical Development Programme (previously implemented with the Rebel Og squads) with club underage players. A spreadsheet is available with a detailed breakdown of the various exercises which make up the programme as well as web links to Youtube clips demonstrating the exercises. This programme is recommended for 14-18 year olds and should ideally be completed over a 6 week period at the start of the season and progresses over a players underage career. There is no reason why some/all of the exercises shouldn’t be included in some form within the training programme for the remainder of the season.

The aims of the programme are to help develop the player physically in an age appropriate way, to help improve performance, to help prevent injury and to help prepare the young player for the physical demands of adult sport when they leave the underage ranks. The exercises in the programme are fairly straight forward but are specific to the needs of the teenage GAA player. There is no injury risk involved and the session can be completed anywhere from at home to the school hall to the pitch. Following on from the GAA 15 Warm-up (http://learning.gaa.ie/GAA15_1-5) this programme is another very useful tool for underage coaches and players.

If anyone requires a copy of the spreadsheet detailing the exercises drop an email to [email protected] and I'll send on a copy.
