SACRED HEART STUDENTS CROWNED MUNSTER JUNIOR CAMOGIE CHAMPIONS

At the headquarters of Cork Camogie, Sacred Heart Secondary School were crowned Munster Junior Camogie Champions when they defeated the students from St. Mary’s Midleton on a score of 1 goal and 10 points to 2 goals. The West Cork girls performed right from the start with early scores that settled the nerves. Eimear O’ Brien put the score board to work with some beautiful scores from play and from the placed ball. Her goal 25 minutes into the first half was a score of beauty with Caoimhe Murphy picking out Maeve Kingston in the corner, who beat 2 opponents before directing an inch perfect pass to O’ Brien who hit an unstoppable shot, past the Midleton keeper. The Clonakilty backs and Mid field were to the fore with many attacks thwarted. Here Emma O’ Driscoll, Annie Condon and Allanah O’ Brien were flying with O’ Driscoll magnificent, hooking, blocking and clearing ball after ball. Midleton finished the half with a goal that caught Sacred Heart off guard and the game was back in the balance.

The game resumed with Sacred Heart taking control once more. Jessica McCarthy and Mary Murphy worked tirelessly and Clonakilty’s centre back line of Kelly O’ Gorman, Daire O’ Brien and Kate O’ Donovan dominated that critical zone of the field as Midleton upped a gear in a valiant effort to test the students from West Cork. As the pressure mounted, Sinead McCarthy in the Sacred Heart goal showed calmness under fire as she read every ball entering the goal mouth and cleared with confidence. Outfield the hard running Millie Condon thundered into the game, with her direct style and speed. At critical stages she won frees and set up scores as players tired on an energy sapping pitch. Clonakilty upped their game again and scores from the free sunning Anna Flynn, Lydia Sutton and Eimear O’ Brien stretched the game beyond St. Mary’s. The Midleton girls engineered a late goal with time almost up. It was a great team performance from Clon, with a high tempo defensive display, that caught the eye of the appreciate supporters from both sides. The magnificent Daire O’ Brien lifted the Munster trophy on behalf of the West Cork ladies who now play the Leinster champions, in an All -Ireland semi-final scheduled for late February. Many thanks to Mr. Mulcahy & Mr. Daly and to their backroom team of Ella O’Donoghue, Nicole O’Donovan Hayes, Jessica O’Driscoll, Sarah Harrington, Hannah Sexton, Lauren Walsh and of course Ken the bus driver! Many thanks also for the great support from staff and parents alike. Roll on the All-Ireland semi final!
