23 November, 2019

On this date twenty years ago (Tuesday, 23rd November 1999) in a closely contested Munster Vocational School Senior B Hurling semi final at Fermoy, Clonakilty Community College backboned with a strong Barryroe contingent, fought out a tough battle with Cahir that only saw the result settled after extra time.

Clonakilty had the aid of a strong cross wind in the opening half and had early points by Denis Harrington and Kieran Griffin (2). Colaiste Dun Iascaigh had their first score in the 18th minute through Paul Kennedy, 0-4 to 0-01. There was a period of nine minutes before the next score when both defences were well on top. Clonakilty had a goal by Denis Harrington following a good solo run. The West Cork side led at the break 1-05 to 0-01.

The second half saw Cahir do very well with the aid of the breeze. They had a succession of points by David Byron (2), Kennedy and Shane Sweeney to be within a goal with 17 mins remaining. Harrington had a 21-meter free saved and followed in the 51st min with a pointed free 1-06 to 0-05. Cahir continued to press ahead and a powerful shot by Byron struck the upright and found its way to the net to bring Cahir within a single point 1-06 to 1-05. A minute later Michael Kennedy set James McGrath away who pointed a drew level 1-06 each. Clonakilty edged ahead again with David Fleming point. In the dying moments Kennedy pointed a free followed by the full time whistle with both sides level at 1-07 each.

In the first period of extra time Clonakilty had a goal by Jason Fleming and a point by his brother, Adrian. Cahir had a point from Kennedy again, 2-08 to 1-08 at the extra time break. Clonakilty ensured victory with early points on the restart by Griffin and Harrington, 2-10 to 1-08. The Cahir side battled hard and had a point by Kennedy. However, some solid defending by Clonakilty's John Daly and the outstanding Tim Callanan along with a very solid keeper in Ger Keohane denied Cahir some more scores.

Paul McCarthy and Jason Fleming (free) added points for the winners while Kennedy had two points in the closing minutes for Cahir with Adrian Fleming having a point for Clonakilty to bring the curtain down on proceedings. Full time score Clonakilty Community College 2-13 Col Dun Iascaigh Cahir 1-11

In early 2000 Clonakilty secured the title for the fourth time in their history as they defeated Kanturk on a score of 2-09 to 1-06.
