Club Archives: U21s win 'A' Hurling C'ship

25 September, 2020

This weekend forty years ago, on Sunday the 28th September 1980, the Barryroe U21 hurling team took to the field in Bandon in the replayed Carbery U21 'A' Hurling Championship Final and after an enthralling hour's play emerged victorious against a determined Ballinascarthy. This was the club's first U21 hurling title at the top level in Carbery.

The first game in this competition was against Gabriel Rangers, a game which was greatly effected by the weather. It was a hard-tough struggle, but the greater experience of the Barryroe lads took us to victory. Ballinscarthy were next up in the final and what a cracking game it was. It was the curtain raiser to the South West Junior A Hurling Final in Bandon and from a neutral point of view, the U21 game had by far the greater thrills and skills. The game finished in a draw which was a fair result. The replay was even better, and it drew a record crowd for an under 21 game. The play swung from end to end and at the finish Barryroe were just in front. Barryroe then progressed to the County series where they faced Midleton at Ballygarvan. Midleton paraded a star-studded team which included many of their outstanding senior team as well as some who wore the red jersey of Cork in minor and U21 level. But Barryroe gave one of their greatest every display's outside of the division and in the end were only beaten by a few late scores.
