Ref calls a halt to final early

09 December, 2020

#onthisdate thirty years ago a thrilling junior 'C' hurling championship West Cork final at Bandon on Sunday the 9th of December 1990 ended prematurely when referee, Sean Crean, called a halt to proceedings five minutes from the end of extra time. In the circumstances the official in charge had little other choice as a large crowd had encroached on the Bandon second pitch, due to overcrowding on the sideline and though the game was scrupulously clean and the crowd behavior excellent, it was decided to halt the game early in the interests of safety.

Early on in the game, Newcestown had played with a strong wind but Barryroe had contained them well to be on level terms nearing half-time. However, goals from Barry White and Michael Crowley put them ahead at the break and in a tremendously exciting second half Barryroe eventually leveled with eight minutes to go thanks to a goal each from William Sheehy and Batt Whelton. In the hectic closing exchanges Declan O'Donovan from a free pointed to put Newcestown ahead but Batt Whelton, with a similar effort left the sides all square at the end of normal time.

In the first period of extra time, the accuracy of Batt Whelton from frees helped Barryroe go into a three point lead while playing with the breeze, but on the changeover Newcestown battled back and a point apiece from Declan O'Donovan and Finbarr Lynch narrowed the gap to a single point when proceedings were called to a halt five minutes from time.

The subsequent decision of the West Cork Board is unknown to this scribe!
