Broadstrand Christmas Swim 2020

17 December, 2020

45 Years ago, a small group of five locals (you could hardly call them swimmers), took to the sea at Broadstrand on Christmas Morning and started the annual tradition that has continued ever since. Overcoming storms, snow, sleet, ice and mountainous waves, nothing was ever unsurmountable, and then this year, along comes Covid 19.  For decades this joined up venture between Courtmacsherry and Timoleague has raised much needed funds for the local Charities of COPE and Cystic Fibrosis and as the late and much loved organiser Sean Connolly of Cregane would say….. the show must go on somehow.

With this in mind, they are organising a very different Charity Swim for 2020, where one can swim anywhere, on any day, at any time over Christmas Week and contribute either online or to any committee member below. Every single contribution is divided in full between COPE in Clonakilty and the Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Unit at CUH. Contributions online can be made at GOFUNDME.COM, and search Broadstrand Swim, which has been set up by the Courtmacsherry Development Association.

So for this year, it’s Broadstrand or any Safe Strand and please adhere to all Covid Regulations and all Safe Sea Swimming guidelines.

Please God it will be much different in 2021, but for now, stay safe, stay swimming, support local and keep the spirits up.

Please share with them any pictures of Swim 2020, be it anywhere in the world or in our beloved West Cork. Find them on facebook @ Broadstrand Christmas Swim
