Barryroe exit JFC....

22 June, 2013

Barryroe 0-8                O'Mathúnas 3-6

While two goals in the last five minutes, won this game for the Castletownkennagh side, the famous words of Roy Keane sprung to mind; "fail to prepare, prepare to fail".

Barryroe had virtually no football done coming into this game and it showed. I counted three clear chances where the ball just needed to be rolled over the goal line, (think Peter Kanavan's famous goal in the All-Ireland final). Three times we tried to break the net, and three times we missed. There were a couple of other goal-scoring chances in a surprisingly open game, but if you are not training, you will not score under pressure.

The game began with a series of wides as we faced a howling wind in the first half. Finally after seven minutes, Mathúna's opened the scoring with a point. A minute later a defensive mix up let them in for a very soft goal.

A minute later we missed an open goal, but Kevin O'Driscoll picked up the clearance to point. O'Mathúnas added two points before Kieran Griffin drove a fine point through the wind. Things were changing now, Griffin began to play and Clive Cahalane was pulled back from the full forward line and began to pick up a lot of ball around the middle. Now there was space for Dave O'Sullivan and Mike O'Brien. O'Sullivan in particular began to destroy his marker as we played quicker ball into the two man full forward line. However we did not make the most of this possession. On 25 minutes Kieran Griffin set up Clive Cahalane for a fine point Bernard O Brien made another for Michael O'Driscoll and Timmy Carroll had another. A Mathúna's point on half time, meant we turned over just 1-4 to 5 points behind.

The second half saw us move away from what had been working. We went back to a three man forward line and everyone pushed on. All of as sudden there was no space for Dave and Mike, (much to the relief of their markers).

Still points from Mike O'Brien, corner back John Whelton and Michael O'Driscoll, saw us lead for the first time. On the 20th minute of the second half, Mathúnas had their first score of the second half to level and went ahead a minute later with a point. A this stage however, the game was still to be won, but five minutes later we again  over committed turned over the ball and Mathúna's strolled through the middle of our defence to grab a goal against the run of play. We were now four points down and we threw caution to the wind, dismissing point chances that would have brought it to a one score game. A final breakaway in the last minute saw Mathúnas grab another goal, in a game we could have won with a bit of practice.

Kieran Griffen had a good game for Barryroe, Dave O'Sullivan won loads of possession, but a lack of composure let him

down on a couple of occasions, while Clive Cahalane can also be happy with his night's work.
