Butlerstown shock winners of Townlands Cup.

30 December, 2014

Butlerstown are stunning winners of the Barryroe Townland Golf Classic for
2014.

As we observed the 32 best (or worst) golfers in the Parish assemble in the
famed Fota Island Golf Club on last Saturday, one would have to be impressed
by the arrival of a very well drilled (and dressed) Butlerstown team led by
their now professional Captain Brendan O Sullivan. Far from the ordinary cup
of coffee and a scone, this team tucked into a Full Irish at 10.30am, a full
90 minutes before their tee time. Studying the course with a fine tooth
comb, we knew that this team really meant business, but could they live with
the star studded teams that they were facing.  By 5pm, all was answered, as
Butlerstown emerged winners by a margin of a whopping 8 points in a record
breaking score of 103.  This all conquering team was backboned by the two 60
year olds, Captain Brendan and a rejuvenated Lawrence O Donovan who was
brilliant on the Day. The rest of the quartet was made up of the ever
consistent Richard O Sullivan (Treasurer of Dunmore Golf Club) and Rookie
Brendan Coleman. The other 7 teams all played reasonable but their
performance paled into insignificance when one viewed the Southern Villages
score. Of course there was drama just before the presentation, when some-one
questioned the residency of Rookie Brendan Coleman. The question was asked
as to what side of the Carrigeen road that he now resides on. Quickly the
Stewards assembled to carry out this enquiry and after many phone calls,
came to a solid conclusion , that they would have to rule that his residency
should be marked as of " NO FIXED ABODE".  On this technicality, he was
deemed to be a Butlerstown resident.

At the Victory Social in Butlerstown Hall on Sun night, Non-playing Manager,
Mary O Donovan spoke of the honour that this quartet had brought to the
Village and was ultra confident that this team were going to just get better
and better in the years ahead.  Roll on 2015 and following on the weekend
performances, we now lay the following odds on the winning of next years
event in Christmas 2015.
