Sunday 13 Mar 2016Junior A Football - League

Kealkil, 15:00PM

Barryroe Junior footballers opened their league campaign on Sunday when they made the long trip to Kealkil. This was the first football game of the season and with the Sun shining there was finally a touch of spring in the air after what has been a very long winter and weeks of unplayable pitches. St. Colums with a game already under their belts started with a flourish to score 1-2 in the opening five minutes. Barryroe gradually played themselves into the game with points from Jack Cahalane and Mark Crowley to leave it 1-4 to 0-2, before St.Colums added two further points to stretch their lead. Barryroe were gaining sufficient possession but found a lot of movements breaking down in the final third of the pitch as the hard-tackling St.Colums defence made a number of turnovers and quickly counter-attacked to add to their tally. At half-time the score was 1-7 to 0-3.

Barryroe started the second-half with points from Jack Cahalane to narrow the gap to 1-8 to 0-5. Both sides continued to trade points before a great goal by Timmy Carroll had the score 1-12 to 1-7 after good approach work by Jason Fleming, John Whelton, John Dullea, Daniel O'Driscoll and Mark Crowley. A further point from Daniel O’Driscoll after a good break by Jack Murphy and three from St. Colums left the final score at 1-15 to 1-8 in favour of St.Colums.
