Barryroe 1-12  St.James 2-9

Barryroe welcomed visitors St.James on Tuesday night in a football league game and at the end of the hour shared the points on offer. Given the rain that fell on Sunday, the pitch was in a better condition than could be expected thanks to the work of Tim Carroll and Patrick Barry.  St.James got off to an explosive start with a point inside the first 10 seconds quickly followed by a another point and goal to leave it 1-2 to 0-0 after just 4 minutes.   Gradually Barryroe played themselves into the game but were unable to put scores on the board against a crowded defence which is the norm in all games nowadays.  It took some fine free-taking from Mark Crowley to help Barryroe get on the score board before David O’Sullivan was fouled for a penalty which was expertly put away by John Whelton to leave it 1-4 to 1-2.  At that stage Barryroe were very much in control and continued to shoot but were not hitting the target as well as they could.  Further frees from Mark Crowley and Johnny O’Donovan saw the game level at the break with a score of 1-5 apiece.

Barryroe started the second-half well with great scores from play from David O’Sullivan and a further excellent score from Tadhg Harrington after a full-length pitch counter-attack by Pa Moloney, Conor O’Regan and Kieran Griffin.  A further point from Jason Fleming stretched the gap to three entering the final ten minutes.  At this stage St.James broke to score a goal to lead by one against the run of play, before a brace of points from Mark Crowley had matters level after a controversial wide was given as a point for St.James despite the Barryroe protestations.  A further counter-attack from St.James saw them score a point that looked to have clinched the points on the night.   But, Barryroe showing great heart and verve kept attacking and the hard-working David O’Sullivan was fouled for a free on the right-hand side.  Johnny O’Donovan who had retired earlier with injury returned to the field to take the kick from his left earning a hard-working draw on the night.
