Ardfield, 18:30PM

Ibane Gaels 1-09 Clonakilty 1-11

In a closely fought battle at a winterish Ardfield on Tuesday evening Clonakilty prevailed on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-09. Clonakilty started brightly and playing against the “hill” and the wind led by three points to no score after as many minutes, and Ibane looked in trouble. Following a few positional switches Ibane settled and rattled off the next three points to draw level by the 10th minute. Conor Madden’s booming restarts were causing panic in the Clonakilty rearguard and in the 16th minute Ibane capitalised to the full as a long puck-out broke on the 20 yard line and Darragh O’Donovan raced through and made no mistake from 10 yards, Ibane now led 1-04 to 0-05. Poor discipline was punished by both free takers as the sides retired at the short whistle 1-06 to 0-07, a seemingly slender lead considering the elements and fall of ground.

Ibane were first to strike and open the scoring in the second half to lead 1-07 to 0-07. Scores were at a premium, in part due to good defending but more often due to poor shooting.  However Clonakilty slowly started to make gains and in the 47th minute a goalmouth scramble somehow ended up in the Ibane net, Clonakilty now in poll position leading 1-09 to 1-08. Ibane dug deep and registered the next score in the 22nd minute but unfortunately they never troubled the scoreboard operator again, the ball breaking to the Brewery men more kindly in the final few minutes as they ran out winners on a score of Ibane 1-09 to Clonakilty 1-11.
