Ibane came up just short in the U21 A hurling Quarter Final played in Ballinascarthy on Saturday evening. It was Clonakilty who opened the scoring but Ibane replied with well taken points from Sean Holland and Ted Kearney, Clonakilty started to take over and had stretched their lead at half time to 0-11 to 0-05. Ibane too reliant on Ted and Sean for scores.
On the resumption Clonakilty pounced for an early goal to leave the score 1-11 to 0-06 a margin of seven points and this was still the difference between the teams with twenty minutes elapsed of the second half. Ibane Gaels then started to get into the game helped by a good Bill Fleming goal to make it 1- 15 to 1-11. Clon hit back with two points, to stretch their lead back to six points. An Ibane free was then buried to the net by our goalkeeper Micheal Whelton and now it was game on, 1-17 to 2-11. Clon scored again to lead by four but in the third minute of injury time Bill got his second goal to leave Clonakilty leading by the minimum. Ibane had momentum and with the clock in the 65th minute Ted pointed a free to level the game and everyone expected the final whistle to blow. The puckout was taken quickly, Clonakilty won a free and pointed it. Game over, Clonakilty 1-19 Ibane 3-12.
To say the Ibane team was disappointed afterwards is an understatement, while overall Clonakilty were the better team it was tough on the lads to be beaten the way the game ended. Thanks to the lads for their effort all year and to Vincent, John Michael and Donal the selectors and to Declan, Brendan and Jason who helped out with training.
