Barryroe 4-09 Carrigaline 3-15

On a beautiful balmy July evening in Bandon, Barryroe took on Carrigaline in the Senior 'B' Championship. This was Barryroe’s second game in the round robin series.

The game began at speed with a point from Sile Burns after 40 seconds. Within another minute Elaine Ryan pounced to score a goal following excellent direct play by the Barryroe girls. The next score was from Carrigaline wing forward on the 5th minute followed up by a goal a minute later. The pace of play was fast and direct with a goal next for Barryroe following a superb long puck out from Eimear White gathered by Sile Burns and again she rattled the Carrigaline net to put the score at 2-01 to 1-01, Barryroe leading. A minute later Sile slotted another point which was countered by another pointed free by Carrigaline. A further point from play from Carrigaline left the score at 1-05 to 2-02. The next score came from Sile in the 18th minute and was quickly followed up by another goal from Sile Burns. She again pounced for a goal in the 25th minute leaving the score at half time 4-03 to 1-05 to Barryroe.

The second half began with two quick scores from Carrigaline scoring a goal and a point within a minute. This was then followed up by a point from their wing forward and the gap of seven points was now down to two points. Carrigaline scored a further two points to level the game before Claire Sexton steadied the ship for Barryroe with a point in the 8th minute of the second half while Sile converted a 45 in the 10th minute of the second half. However Carrigaline continued to press forward and scored a further three points from play while Sile Burns scored a point from a free and a 45. Then came Carrigaline’s third goal to which Barryroe replied with an inspirational score from centre back Ger Collins. This left Barryroe within two points of  the opposition. Debra O'Leary won a great ball on the wing and passed inside to Sile who put the ball over the bar to leave the minimum between the two teams. The game hung in the balance and Claire Sexton had a great run on goal and her shot was saved by the keeper. There was a scramble on the near post and Rachel Sheehy and Claire couldn’t get the ball into the net and it was waved wide. It was touch and go but then Carrigaline scored two further points from play to finish off the game and leave the scoreline at Carrigaline 3-15 Barryroe 4-09.
