Barryroe 0-11 Diarmuid Ó Mathúna's 2-10

Barryroe welcomed Diarmuid Ó Mathúna's for the championship final of the Rowa / Rowex Pharma West Cork Junior D football on Sunday morning last. The sun was shining on a bright autumn morning but the underfoot conditions were poor after the week’s rain.

Barryroe struck first blood as centre back Kieran Griffin stole up field for a cracking point in the first minute. Mathúna's gradually worked their way into the game and struck for the game’s crucial score in the 11th minute as John Paul O’Callaghan billowed the home side’s net, Mathúna's led 1-02 to 0-01. Barryroe were gaining sufficient possession and were rewarded for some fine attacks with scores from play by Killian Lawton (2), Eamonn McCarthy and Kevin O’Donovan before retiring for the break, 1-05 to 0-06 in arrears.

Barryroe started the second half with points from Mike Brien and Ger Keohane, and when Jason slotted a free in the 42nd minute to level the game and finally erase the deficit of the first half goal, it seemed that the home side would cast off the shackles of the Mathúna's challenge and kick for home, a view which was quickly reinforced by Mike O’Brien’s 47th minute monster point which saw Barryroe now lead 0-11 to 1-07. But Mathúna's response was emphatic as they found another gear and outscored the home side 1-03 in the final quarter to run out deserved victors on a score of 2-10 to 0-11.

This was the final adult game of the 2017 season and we thank all players, management teams, pitch staff / helpers and supporters for their efforts during the season.
