Saturday 28 May 2016Ibane U14H 'P2' - Championship

Macroom, 14:00PM

Ibane Gaels 2-14 (20) Cuchulainn's 3-12 (21)

Brave Ibane Gaels bow out at the semi final stage after an exciting hours hurling in glorious sunshine in Macroom.

Trailing by 3-08 by 0-06 at half time Ibane had it all to do in the second half and within minutes of the restart they were on the way, as poor discipline from Cuculainn's was punished at every opportunity by Adam McSweeney's accurate free taking. With four minutes of normal time remaining Ibane had somehow pulled level, 2-13 to 3-10 and all to play for. But unfortunately for Ibane they could not obtain possession to work a leading score. With the clock ticking down, a Cuchulainn free on the stroke of normal time established a one point lead, all in attendance assumed at least three minutes of injury time* and that Ibane would get one final chance to draw level, but the referee had other ideas and to the surprise of everyone in attendance blew the full time whistle and swiftly exited the scene. A dejected Ibane team slumped to the ground knowing they had come so close, but it wasn’t to be.

Great credit is due to the players for their never say die attitude and even though the desired outcome wasn’t achieved, both clubs can be very optimistic for the future. These lads can now park the small ball for the coming weeks and concentrate on the big ball as they will take the might of Kerry in the Féile na nGael on the weekend of the 24th June in Kenmare.

*Referee spent at least one minute consulting with umpires in relation to an Ibane disputed goal (given as a point), two deserved yellow cards (one for each time) meant both players getting a stern lecture for cynical tackles, an injury to the Cuchulainn full forward, all events taking place in the 2nd half.
