Barryroe show class to avoid relegation

Barryroe won this Intermediate Hurling Championship releagtion tie at Ballygarvan last night with an impressive performance in a game that for long periods failed to sparkle.

Inniscarra, who were fielding their second side at this level for the first time were pleased with the competion their players received at this level and many of them forced their way into their Premier Intermediate side.

There was a sense of urgency about the Barryroe side from the start as they set about their task with great efficiency, hitting five points in as many minutes without reply. Tadgh Harrington who finished Barryroe's leading scorer with a tally of 1-08, hit three points, two of them frees from around the half way line and David O'Sullivan and Ciaran Hurley also got on the scoresheet. Alan Sheehan, Altan O'Connell and Cathal Griffin worked hard to get Inniscarra back into the game. Dylan O'Sullivan opened Inniscarra's account with a pointed free after 10 minutes but that was cancelled out by a point from Ciaran Hurley. The Inniscarra full back line of Bryan O'Mahony, Brian Gould and Danny O'Herlihy began to take control and a point from Dominic Kelleher and frees by Craig Bennett and Dylan O'Sullivan had the margin down to two points after 20 minutes. Barryroe finished the half the stronger side with a free by Tadgh Harrington and points from play by Hurley and John Whelton to give the Carbery side 0-09 to 0-04 half time lead.

From the restart Tadgh Harrington was fouled as he bore down on goal and from the resulting penalty he found the net. David O'Sullivan added two quick points to Barryroe's tally as they doubled their lead to ten points. The pace of the game dropped as both sides added two points apiece over the next fifteen minutes. Twelve minutes from time a free from the half way line by Brian Gould ended up in the Barryroe net. Any hopes of a late Inniscarra revival never materialised as Barryroe upped the ante and finished the stronger. David O'Sullivan added his fifth point and infringements by Inniscarra were punished by Tadgh Harrington who added three points, two from placed balls. Credit Inniscarra, they battled away to the final whistle and were rewarded with a goal from Dylan O'Sullivan in added time but it was the West Cork side who celebrated an eight point winning margin.
