Barryroe 4-10 Brian Dillons 2-10

On a mild Saturday evening with a gentle breeze blowing Barryroe set off to Enniskeane to play their first Senior Championship game of 2017. As the crowd gathered the excitement and apprehension was palpable. Brian Dillons got the scoring underway with the opening two points before Barryroe's Sile Burns got a pass from Claire Sexton and glided it over the bar. Claire Sexton scored the next point from a free for a foul on Ger Collins. Point for point was exchanged between both teams before Rachel Sheehy got the game's opening major, a fantastic goal, which was quickly followed by another Sile free.

Brian Dillons defence was strong but with Kate Whelton and Roisin Dullea in midfield, both very strong players keeping the ball moving to the forward line, it wasn't long before our forwards broke them down, with Elaine Ryan, Debra O'Leary and Caroline McCarthy giving their all to continue Barryroe's scoring chances. Three great goals followed from Sile Burns, scoring the first at her ease, the next goal being disallowed but a penalty followed which was superbly dispatched and the third another great pass from Aideen O'Riordan to Sile to complete her first half hat-trick. A final point before half time by Sile Burns completed the half's scoring, Barryroe leading 4-05 v 0-07.

The second half was a much tougher affair and with the wind behind them Brian Dillons rallied, but the Barryroe defence held firm. Eimear White giving great puck outs and saves and her back line Meabhdh Sexton, Karen McCarthy and Aideen O'Riordan assisting. Long strikes from Jennifer White and Ger Collins and Rebecca McCarthy made hard work for Brian Dillons. Grace Tobin was a fantastic asset as was Hannah Whelton when they were subs on after half time. Barryroe's scores in the second half came from Sile Burns, 3 points and Claire Sexton scored 2 points. Barryroe running out deserved winners on a score 4-10 to 2-10.
