Monday 13 Nov 2017U16 Camogie - West Cork Final

Barryroe, 19:00PM

Barryroe 5-07 Kilbree 5-06

Having won the U16 West Cork in 2016, Barryroe were determined to retain it for another year. In a game that turned out to be as exciting as anticipated, it was a thrilling encounter for all supporters. It was a good November evening in Barryroe with the pitch in excellent condition. Ciara O’Sullivan opened the scoring, slotting over a fine point. Ciara Collins laid off a great pass to Ciara O’Sullivan to send it between the posts and then pointed again from a free. The next point was from the stick of Maeve Whelton, assisted by Aideen O’Riordan. Andrea Tobin was feeding a lot of ball into the forwards, supported by Eva Scallan Dowd and Sarah O’Regan. Kilbree replied with a goal and a point. Ciara O’Sullivan raised another two white flags to give us the lead. One of those came from a great puck out from Therese McCarthy. Chloe Collins was working hard to win possession. Kilbree pointed again. Ciara O’Sullivan responded with a point. But disaster struck as the Rossmore girls racked up three unanswered goals in quick succession. We were now trailing 0-07 to 4-02 at the half time whistle. Eight of the girls having travelled to Cahir earlier that morning for a school match seemed to have taken its toll.

But whatever pep talk Pat Tobin gave at the break must have given the girls the inspiration to drive on. Claire Tobin, who was brought on before the end of the first half for Chloe Collins, netted a much needed goal to reduce the margin. Our girls were beginning to claw their way back. Another crucial goal from Ciara O’Sullivan helped to reduce the gap further. Kilbree then responded with a goal and two points to increase their lead. Claire Dullea had been on as a sub for Sarah O’Regan and was making a great impact. Roisin Dullea was doing trojan work in the back line aided by Aine Moloney and Naomi Murphy. Next Claire Tobin won possession and soloed through and in a goal mouth scrable which also involved Grace, it was Claire who got the final touch for a goal. Both sides were now battling hard for possession. Jessica McCarthy took her opportunity to rattle the back of the net for a goal. We were now level but Kilbree replied with a point to take the lead again. Our girls were leaving it all out on the field now and were going toe to toe with the Rossmore girls. With ten minutes to go, Roisin McCarthy, on the run, got the critical goal for Barryroe to lead by two points. The clock was now ticking when Kilbree were awarded a penalty but pointed. This turned out to be the last score. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle eventually blew.

The Cup was presented to our Captain, Ciara O’Sullivan by Chairperson of Carbery Camogie Board, James Tobin.  It was then off to The Grange Tavern for some well earned refreshments.
