Junior Camogie v Aghabullogue

02 September, 2023

Barryroe Junior B Camogie team played Aghabullogue in their second championship game in Coachford on Wednesday night last. Having secured a comprehensive win against Inniscarra the week before, the girls in blue were hopeful of making it two in a row. However, they faced a tough encounter against a physical Aghabullogue side who showed their experience of being part of a bigger senior club and panel. The home team were quick to lay down their mark and had the ball in the back of the net within minutes of the throw in. Their backs gave the Barryroe forwards little chance to get on the ball and forced them to concede some wasted scoring opportunity, while up front they were moving fast both on and off the ball and proving a handful for the defence. To Barryroe’s credit they battled on and while they seemed to always be on the back foot for the opening 30 minutes, their dogged determination and tremendous work rate in the midfield area ensured they stayed in the game. An excellent point by substitute Marie Dineen at the stroke of half time left the scoreline at 1-06 to 6 points in favour of Aghabullogue.

Barryroe commenced the second half adamant to take matters into their own hands but again Aghabullogue were proving a stronghold. Two points from play by the home side were nullified by a 45 and a free both coming from the stick of Rebecca McCarthy. When Aghabullogue struck for goal number two leaving a 6-point gap, the game seemed to be slipping away from Barryroe, but once again they dug deep and showed their never say die fighting spirit that they are fast becoming known for. A goal and a point both from Rebecca McCarthy frees brought the deficit down to just 2 points. Aghabullogue fought back to secure 2 further points leaving 4 points between the teams. However, with Barryroe forward line now dominating proceedings and with just minutes left on the clock, Marie Dineen delivered a great ball into Rebecca McCarthy who duly sent it to the back of the net, narrowing the gap to just 1 point and all to play for. But, unfortunately for Barryroe they had left their comeback too late. Aghabullogue secured a point from a 45 for the last puck of the game and were relieved to hear the referee’s final whistle signal the end of a hard-fought encounter. Final score 2-11 to 2-09.

Barryroe will regroup this week in preparation for their 3rd round at home against Kildorerry on Sunday 10th @ 12 noon. This is a must win match for the team and as always, all support is greatly appreciated.
