Under 12 round up, plus how not to spend your 60th birthday.

16 April, 2015

U12 Football Group B (13aside) Barryroe vs Clann na nGael in Barryroe

After a close 1st half, which ended all square – 2-7 apiece, Clann na nGael took advantage of the wind to pull away from Barryroe in the 2nd half.

There are a lot of positives to take from the game, but also a lot of learnings

The 2nd game was postponed to a later date, as Clann na nGael did not have sufficient numbers to field two teams.

For many it was the end of the working week, but for Lifeboat Legend Micheal Hurley, a member of the Courtmacsherry RNLI All weather Lifeboat Crew for over 38 years, Friday evening was only the commencement  of a  very busy period of activity at sea, as he responded successfully to three rescues off our shores.  Just home on leave from his recent Engineering and Marine assingment as he helps widen the Suez Canal, Michael was gearing up for a nice quiet 60th birthday weekend, when the bleepers activated at 5.40 on Friday to rescue a 60ft Fishing Vessel off the Seven Heads,
As that Fishing vessel was safely berthed at Courtmacsherry Pier  at 8.45pm, an emergency call was received from Valentia Coastguard, that a large dog had fallen off the high Cliffs at File Na Mho, near Broadstrand in Courtmacsherry Bay and that the owner who had tried to climb down the cliff to retrieve it, had failed and was in danger himself. The owner alerted the rescue Services through a 999 call and immediately, the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat responded. Within minutes at 8.50pm, the Lifeboat arrived at the Base of the Cliffs and using its powereful engines and spotlights, located the stricken dog on the rocky waters edge. Using its inflatable punt,  two members of the Lifeboat crew (Including Micheal's son Ciaran)  in special RNLI Lifeboat wetsuits, suceeded in securing  the Large Rhodesian Ridgeback and brought it to the safety of the Lifeboat, while the powerful Lifeboat Searchlights guided its owner to safety at the Cliff top.
The Lifeboat was called out again on Sat afternoon  at 3.50pm to respond to a Mayday call from a 55ft Fishing vessel that encountered difficulities just 2 miles south of the Old Head Of Kinsale in West Cork.   In fresh winds blowing Force 5, with a two meter swell, the Lifeboat was away within minutes and located the casuality at 4.25pm and immediately secured a tow line. It  brought the vessel under its control and proceeded to tow the Fishing Boat, with 6 crew on board back to Kinsale Harbour.
With three successful callouts completed, Micheal had to be content with a few quiet pints on Sat Night after he googled just what kind of a large dog they had brought ashore....The Rhodesian Ridgeback he found out is a Lion killer.... now we know why instict told him to  remain at the back of the attached picture.
