The following message was posted on the Facebook page of Cork Boston GAA:
It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Richie Fleming Snr, one of our club’s great former players.
Richie was the eldest of the Fleming family, a name that has been synonymous with the Cork Boston club and the wider Boston Irish community for decades. A native of Barryroe in West Cork, Richie emigrated to Boston at the age of 21 in 1957 and immediately made his mark, playing a key role as the club captured the 1959 Boston Championship.
He went on to enjoy further success throughout the 1960s, helping the club to three more championships, and continued to line out for Cork Boston through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Richie also won championships while playing in New York and represented the Cork club locally at junior hurling level.
Among his finest achievements was captaining a Boston/New England select team that faced Galway and Mayo in New York during the 1960s.
The Fleming name has remained closely tied to the club ever since, most notably through his son, Richie Jr — the finest American-born player to have played the game in Boston — who played a pivotal role in our senior successes at the turn of the century.
The Cork Boston club was proud to honour Richie Snr and his brother Brendan in May 2023, in recognition of their lifelong contributions to the club.
