Barryroe got their Bandon Co-Op Carbery Roinn 4 Junior A Football Championship campaign off to a winning start with a dramatic one-point victory over St Colum's in Leap on Friday evening.
It was a contest that ebbed and flowed throughout, with the sides separated by just a single point at half-time before a tense second period of football saw the lead change hands on several occasions. In the end, Barryroe held their nerve, with Luke kicking the winning point deep into injury time to secure a 1-14 to 1-13 victory.
St Colum's made the brighter start, opening the scoring inside the first minute before Olan settled Barryroe with a converted free after five minutes. Olan edged Barryroe in front shortly afterwards with an excellent point from play, but St Colum's responded well and struck for the game's first goal after thirteen minutes to move three points clear.
Barryroe refused to panic and gradually worked their way back into the game. Ryan was influential throughout, adding a series of excellent scores, including two well-taken points from play before Olan found the net in the 26th minute to level matters at 1-5 apiece. Ryan then landed a superb two-point free to give Barryroe breathing space before St Colum's narrowed the gap with a late free, leaving Barryroe leading 1-7 to 1-6 at the interval.
Barryroe began the second half strongly, with Mike and Olan both finding the target to stretch the advantage to three points. However, St Colum's responded impressively with four unanswered points to edge back in front as the game entered the final quarter.
Barryroe showed tremendous character when it mattered most. Conn steadied the ship with an important score before Ryan produced one of the moments of the evening, splitting the posts from outside the arc for a superb two-pointer to restore Barryroe's lead.
St Colums continued to battle and drew level once again entering the closing stages. Olan calmly converted another free to edge Barryroe ahead before St Colum's responded with two late scores to make it 1-13 apiece.
With the game seemingly destined for a draw, Barryroe produced one final attack. Deep into added time, Luke kept his composure to slot over the winning point from a well-claimed advanced mark, sparking celebrations among the Barryroe players and supporters as the final whistle followed shortly afterwards.
It was a hard-earned victory built on resilience, with Barryroe responding superbly to every setback throughout the contest. The result gives us an ideal start to the championship campaign ahead of the remaining group fixtures.
