Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk 2026

13 August, 2026

It’s all systems go for the Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walks that take place from Courtmacsherry on this Sunday August 16th with full proceeds to the Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat Station.

It’s the tenth year of these walks which commenced in 2017 and it’s the Lifeboat Station’s biggest fundraiser every year.

Great it was that Virgin Media Southern News correspondent Zara King accompanied her Grandfather Joe Hilliard this week to the Lifeboat Station, to help promote the event which has options of a full 26.2 mile marathon, a half marathon or a 15k, a 10K or a 5k walk. Joe was one of the original daily walkers on the beautiful Seven Heads Peninsula when he arrived in Courtmacsherry with his family more than 50 years ago.

Registrations are still open on line at Eventbrite.ie and search Great Wild Atlantic Marathon Walk. You can also register on the Sunday morning from 7.30am at the Courtmacsherry Community Centre with an official group start taking place at 9am. Registrations also take place in South Ring from 11.30am for those wishing to do a half marathon back to Courtmacsherry.

Our two Cork Minor footballers Conrad Murphy and Riley O’Donovan will be at the start and see below photo of Conrad at the first walk in 2017 with his brother Luke.

Roll on Sunday and the organisers wish to thank all the participants, sponsors and the many helpers and stewards for ensuring that every euro raised go to Irish Lifeboats. Great to have Barryroe GAA involved for the past 10 years in supporting and stewarding this superb fundraising event and promoting the hugely important Respect the Water Campaign to help prevent drownings around our coastline.

Happy walking!
