Barryroe booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Bandon Co-Op Carbery Roinn 4 Junior A Football Championship after holding off a dramatic late comeback from Goleen to claim a thrilling one-point victory in Skibbereen on Sunday evening.

Barryroe were the sharper side from the throw-in and built an impressive first-half lead through the accuracy of Ryan O’Donovan and some excellent attacking football. Adam McSweeney added a well-taken point before O’Donovan landed a superb two-point free to leave Barryroe 1-9 to 1-2 in front at the interval.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Barryroe keeping Goleen at arm’s length. O’Donovan converted another free before striking the game’s defining score on 44 minutes, finishing clinically to the net after a flowing move to extend the lead to 2-10 to 1-7. Luke Murphy followed with a point, while Liam Colbert’s outstanding two-point free pushed the advantage to eight with just five minutes remaining.

Goleen refused to surrender, however, and a late goal followed by two two-point scores set up a frantic finish, reducing the deficit to the minimum deep into injury time. Barryroe showed tremendous composure in the closing moments, standing firm defensively to seal a deserved 2-13 to 2-12 victory and keep their championship ambitions alive.
